Terms

The terms we work by.

The things that are usually buried in small print, written the way we would say them to you. If any of it is unclear, ask and we will explain it in ordinary words.

Who we are

Trace & Mordant.

Trace & Mordant makes made-to-measure curtains, blinds, upholstery, cushions and rugs, working across the Delhi National Capital Region. You can reach us at Contact@traceandmordant.com or on WhatsApp at 98129 77977.

Below, “we” and “us” mean Trace & Mordant, and “you” means anyone using this website or enquiring with us.

What this site is

A shop window, not a shop.

You cannot buy anything on this website. There is no basket, no checkout, and we take no payment here. What the site does is show you what we make and give you a way to ask us about it.

Because everything we make is measured and cut for one particular room, nothing shown here is an offer to sell at a fixed price. Prices are quoted for your actual windows, furniture or floor, after we have seen them or you have described them to us.

Samples and visits

Both are free, and neither commits you.

We post fabric swatches at no cost, and we visit homes by appointment across the Delhi National Capital Region to measure and advise. Requesting either does not oblige you to order anything, and we will not treat it as though it does.

We ask only that you tell us if an appointment no longer suits, so the time can go to someone else.

Quotes and orders

Nothing is made until it is agreed in writing.

A quote sets out what will be made, in which cloth, at what price, and how long it should take. Unless the quote says otherwise, it holds for 30 days.

An order begins when you confirm the quote and pay whatever deposit it specifies. Until then nothing is cut. After that point the cloth is committed, which is why the next section matters.

Changes and cancellation

Made-to-measure has a point of no return.

Before cutting begins you may change or cancel an order, and we will return any deposit less costs already incurred on your behalf — usually nothing, sometimes the cloth itself if a supplier has already cut it to length.

Once cutting or making has begun, an order cannot be cancelled, because what is being made fits your room and no other. This is the ordinary position for made-to-measure work. It does not affect your rights if what we deliver is faulty, wrongly made, or not what was agreed.

If something is wrong with our work, tell us. We would far rather put it right than argue about it.

Measuring and fitting

If we measure, the measurements are ours.

Where we measure, any error in the measuring is ours to correct at our cost. Where you supply the measurements and ask us to work to them, we make to what you have given us, and a piece that does not fit for that reason is not a fault we can absorb.

Fitting is arranged separately and is not necessarily carried out by the same people who made the piece. Someone will need to give access to the room, and we ask that fragile things be moved out of the way before we arrive.

Cloth, colour and variation

A screen is not a swatch.

Colours on this website are photographs, shown on your screen, under your light. They will not be exact. Decide from a physical swatch — that is what they are for, and why we send them free.

Hand-woven, hand-knotted and hand-finished pieces vary slightly from one to the next, and from the sample. Weave, pile, dye lot and finish all move a little. That variation is a property of the making, not a defect.

Fabric ranges belong to the mills, not to us. If a cloth is discontinued or out of stock between quote and order, we will tell you and offer the nearest thing we can find.

Your own fabric

We will work with cloth you supply, with one condition.

If you send us fabric of your own to make up or to recover a piece, we will treat it carefully, but we cannot be responsible for how it behaves — how it shrinks, fades, frays or wears is a property of that cloth. We will tell you honestly if we think a fabric is unsuited to what you want it to do.

Please send enough. Quantity depends on the measurements and the pattern repeat, and we will give you a figure before you buy.

Payment

Agreed before it is asked for.

The deposit, the balance and when each falls due are set out in your quote. Prices include any taxes stated there. We do not store card or bank details; payment is arranged directly between us.

This website

The words and pictures are ours.

The text, photographs, drawings and design of this site belong to Trace & Mordant. You are welcome to share a link to any page. Please do not copy the content for commercial use without asking us first.

We keep the site accurate and available as best we can, but we do not promise it will be free of errors or never go down. Where we link elsewhere — Instagram, WhatsApp, a supplier — what happens there is not ours to control.

Liability

What we are answerable for.

We are responsible for our own work: for making what was agreed, to the standard agreed, and for putting it right if we do not. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not permit us to limit.

Beyond that, our liability in connection with an order is limited to the amount you paid for it, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss.

Law

Indian law, Delhi courts.

These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts at Delhi have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.

We may update these terms from time to time; the date at the top tells you when they last changed. The terms that apply to your order are the ones in force on the day you confirmed it.

Talk to us first

Most things are solved in a conversation.

If something has gone wrong, write to Contact@traceandmordant.com or message us on WhatsApp at 98129 77977. We answer, and we would rather hear it from you than not hear it at all.
