Help me decide
Cushions

The set is the decision.

A considered set of cushions on a sofa, the room legible around them.

A cushion on its own is a small choice. Put four together and you have decided something about the room — whether it feels calm, or lively, or whether any part of it is allowed to shout.

Colour, surface and scale do most of the work.

Where the cloth comes from

The cloth can come from anywhere.

A cushion is small, and that is most of its advantage.

A curtain cloth is chosen to hang, and wouldn't survive being sat on. An upholstery cloth is chosen for wear, and hangs like a board. A cushion sits between the two and takes either.

So a cushion isn't choosing from a cushion range. It draws on the curtain cloths, the upholstery cloths, and the ones made for cushions alone — three ranges to pick from.

The number isn't fixed either. Two on a chair, eight across a long sofa. You can add one later, or take one away, or replace a single cover without touching the rest. Very little else in a room works that way.

That's a lot of choice. What follows are a few ways of narrowing it, any of which can be right for a room.

Five ways
Five green cushions in one colour family and several distinct surfaces.
01

One colour, every surface different

From a distance the set reads as a single colour. Up close it isn't — a flatweave, a ribbed cloth, a bouclé, a slub. The colour stays calm while the surfaces give it interest.

02

Shades of one

The same colour taken from its deepest to its palest. It looks deliberate in a way a matched set rarely does, because the intervals between one and the next are part of the composition.

Several unrelated cushion colours held together as one considered set.
03

Every one different

Five colours can work together even when you wouldn't normally put them next to each other. When it works, something is usually holding them — the same kind of weave across all five, or one colour appearing quietly more than once.

04

One loud, the rest quiet

Four cloths that sit easily together and one that doesn't. The quiet ones matter more than they look. They are what makes the bright one stand out, rather than just being bright.

05

Pattern doing the work

When the pattern is strong enough it can carry the set on its own — here held to black, white and a single bright, so the graphic reads as order rather than noise.
